The need

Banks and financial institutions across the Pacific lend to small businesses exposed to climate change, including women-owned businesses, but had little guidance on green finance or on how to assess a green finance application.

What we did

We mapped the providers of climate finance and MSME finance in Fiji and Papua New Guinea and assessed existing programmes and knowledge gaps. We wrote a handbook for bank managers and directors on green finance, gender inclusion in climate finance and assessing green finance applications, validated it with key informants, and trained managers and directors of banks and financial institutions alongside business advisors. In Solomon Islands and Cook Islands we wrote climate training content for digital delivery to business advisors and women entrepreneurs, with materials on the climate finance available to their clients.

FAQ

Questions about climate finance for financial institutions

What is a green finance taxonomy?

A green finance taxonomy is a classification system that defines which economic activities count as green or climate-aligned, so that banks and financial institutions can label, report and price green lending consistently. Many countries now publish a national green taxonomy. LirioAI helps banks and financial institutions apply their national green taxonomy to products and credit frameworks.

What is green lending?

Green lending finances activities that cut emissions or build climate resilience, such as energy efficiency, renewable energy and climate-smart agriculture. LirioAI designs green and adaptation lending products for commercial and development banks and other financial institutions.

Can you help a financial institution access climate finance?

Yes. LirioAI helps banks and financial institutions build the products, credit frameworks and reporting that climate funds and development finance institutions look for before they lend to or through a financial institution.
